A beautiful vegetarian felted rug made from the shorn fleece of one of our Boreray ewes. This rug uses only the fleece, no skin, and the sheep who grew the fleece is still living happily on our farm with the rest of our flock.
Boreray are the rarest UK native sheep breed, and those with brown fleeces even rarer. Our Boreray live on the farm as part of our conservation fleece flock and will never be sold for meat, making this rug truly suitable for vegetarians. The Boreray breed comes from the Isle of Boreray, in the St Kilda archipelago in the North Atlantic, approximately 40 miles Northwest of the Hebrides. In the 1970s a small number of the feral flock were bought to the mainland for breed conservation, and todays mainland flock of approximately 500 breeding ewes are descended from these sheep. We have 22 Boreray here on the farm in Wales, and they’re full of character! Only relatively recently domesticated, they are shyer than our other breeds, but many now eat out of our hands and some even like a face rub. The last image shows our Boreray ewes in the snow – given their heritage, they are hardy sheep and do well in our cold winters. Our Boreray are pedigree and Society registered.
This rug is a rich brown in colour, with some cream at one end. The rug is soft and retains the natural curls of the fleece. It would be lovely as either a throw or small rug. The natural insulating properties of wool make it warm and cosy.
This rug has been carefully handmade by Chloe through the traditional craft of wet felting. Wet felting involves the gentle agitation of the back of the fleece to create felt, which holds the locks together. This rug has been made in the natural shape of the sheep fleece. Every year the fleece grows slightly differently on the sheep, making each rug unique.
