A beautiful vegetarian felted rug made from the shorn fleece of one of our Hebridean ewes. This rug uses only the fleece, no skin, and the sheep who grew the fleece is still living happily on our farm with the rest of our flock.
Nestled in the valleys of Mid Wales, we have a small farm with sheep kept only for their fleeces – never sold for meat. The Hebrideans have been with us since our first year on the farm, and are very lovely sheep! Hebrideans are a Scottish sheep, hardy and well suited to our Welsh hills. They grow beautiful fleeces with a long staple length. One of our Hebrideans, Barbara, is our head sheep of the farm and helps to keep everyone else in line! We’ve included a photo of Barbara in the listing as an example of a fleece growing before shearing. Every year our sheep are carefully shorn, and some of the fleeces they have grown are selected by Chloe for felting into rugs.
This rug is a rich natural blend of black and grey in colour. The rug is soft and retains the natural texture of the fleece. It would be lovely as an area rug. The natural insulating properties of wool make it warm and cosy.
This rug has been carefully handmade by Chloe through the traditional craft of wet felting. Wet felting involves the gentle agitation of the back of the fleece to create felt, which holds the locks together. This rug has been made in the natural shape of the sheep fleece. Every year the fleece grows slightly differently on the sheep, making each rug unique.
